A Dog Halloween Video, Why I Became a Dog Trainer

It's FINALLY done!!!   Halloween has gone to the dogs!

Here's our newest Halloween dog trick video!

Why settle for Tricks *OR* Treats when you can have both!!  :)

***********************************************************************
Many people have asked me why I spend so much time/ energy training my dogs and making videos.  I think I've finally figured out the answer.
1)  Because Jasmine LOVES it.  I'm not joking.  She LOVES training.  Because I use positive reinforcement, she gets really good treats whenever we practice.  So if even walk by the treat counter, she will start doing her trick resume, trying to get something from me.  As long as she enjoys doing it, I'll keep training and doing little tricks shows with her.
2)  I started making cute trick videos as a way of sharing Jasmine's talents to more people.  Because based on our experiences as a therapy dog team, I know how her simple little tricks can bring smiles and happiness to someone who is having a rough day.  And based on the friends I've made internationally through Jasmine, I know that dogs can be the bridge between cultures and people of all backgrounds.  They can bring a laugh or smile to anyone's face.

3) But it has even evolved from this.  Dog training has become a passion for me.  Visiting dogs in the shelters, it dawned on me that the vast majority of these dogs have never been given the proper tools to succeed.  They were never trained.  I have friends who volunteer at shelters and rescue groups to work with the training the dogs.  Dogs are more likely to be adopted if they can even sit on command.
So then even if someone's circumstances change, and they need to re-home their dog, they're more likely to find a new owner for a well-trained, well-socialized dog.   So my conclusion is that if more people invested the time to train their dogs in the beginning, less dogs would end up being dumped at the shelters or just abandoned.   I personally consider dogs to be members of the family.  We try to teach our children to play nice and have good manners.  So why wouldn't we teach our pets this?

THIS is my new reason why I make and share Jasmine's trick videos.  I hope to inspire others to work with their dogs.  They don't have to do tricks.  But just teaching basic obedience gives the dog a better chance in life.  So, this is my little way of making the world a more positive place.  :)

P.S.  When I first got Jasmine, I had never trained a dog in my life.  I just read books, and took classes.  I am not a professional dog trainer.  We just learned together.   And that's what helped create our strong bond.  And just look at what Jaz can do now!  It's living proof that if I can do it, anyone can do it!!  :)

Senior Citizens Enjoying Dog Tricks by Jasmine!

Good things happen when you FINALLY get around to replacing your laptop battery!!   I found some old footage of Jasmine that I'm making into new trick videos!   Here's one we just uploaded...

We've done tricks shows for practically every age group now.  And they're all pretty fun.  Jasmine gets so excited when I get out ALL of her props, and start cutting up treats.  She knows we're going to do a show!

This was a fun show to do.  We were asked to perform at a Senior Living Center, in honor of a woman's 96th b-day!!!   We did the trick show, then afterwards I took Jasmine around so that everyone could pet her.  They told me about the dogs they used to have.  It was very sweet.  Jasmine is a therapy dog, and loves people.

Here's a recap of the show we did.  I think everyone enjoyed it.  (Including us.)

More dog modeling pics for @Petsmart!

Remember when we did that modeling gig back in July??  Well, more pics have just been posted on Petsmart's website!  :D

Jasmine modeled about 15 different outfits, so there are probably more pics coming.
(Assuming they turned out good!)

I think Jaz looks really good in pink.  :)

I'm pretty sure Jaz thinks modeling is the easiest trick ever.  You just have to sit/stay, and you get treats.  Not too shabby!!

Petsmart model!!

How cool is this??   Jasmine's picture is on Petsmart's website right now modeling a Halloween outfit!  :)     http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=20225506&lmdn=Dog+Clothes&f=PAD%2FpsNotAvailInUS%2FNo

We did this photo shoot with Petsmart just over a month ago (You can read about it here:  http://www.myfavoritepup.blogspot.com/2013/07/jasmines-fashion-photoshoot.html )
but I honestly forgot about it until a friend told me she saw a picture of Jasmine!  Usually these things take longer to come out!  So this came as a fun surprise to me!   Jaz modeled several outfits that day, so there may be more fun surprises coming later!

Jaz is in the Huffington Post!!

LOL... sometimes I'm clueless.

One of Jasmine's videos started getting a lot of attention- (the 45 Cute Dog Tricks one that I mentioned before)  And I wasn't sure where it was all coming from!  It's had over 20,000 new views in the last 24 hours!  (which is unusual for us!)  I mean... Jaz is popular... but not THAT popular!!

Finally, I was able to solve the mystery!  I discovered that a Spanish version of the Huffington Post used one of her videos in an article!

I used google translate and found out what they said:

"For most dog owners like to teach their pets tricks, but few animals have the talent of Jasmine. Sure, the Havanese is a breed that is known for being highly intelligent and easy to train. Click on the video and enjoy this adorable dog doing 45 of his best thanks. If you want more of it, follow it on Twitter."
.....

So then I posted on Jasmine's Facebook page that I had solved the mystery and this was where all the views were coming from.  Well then one of Jasmine's fans posted the comment- "there's an English version as well!"

Oh duh!   That would make sense!  LOL... it's a good thing I have lots of friends to tell me what's going on!!!!

My favorite part is that when you "like" the article- this is what it posts on Facebook.... "We Get It Doggie, You're Better Than Us."   LOL!!!!

That part cracks me up!!   I'm really happy that the article mentioned that Jasmine was trained using positive reinforcement.  Because sometimes people give me a hard time about forcing my dog to do these tricks.  (Which is ENTIRELY untrue.)  If Jaz doesn't want to do tricks, we don't do them.  However 99% of the time (unless she's really tired) she REALLY WANTS to do tricks!!  (Because that's how she earns yummy treats!!)  And she is VERY treat motivated!!  And she's very smart!  (You just have to ask my mom- who was watching her while I was out of town.)  Jaz is a little too smart!  She figured out how to open the kitchen cabinet door and dump the garbage can!  (Which is why it now has baby locks on it!)  LOL.

But all-in-all, she's a very very sweet dog.  And I'm glad more people get to see her trick videos.  Because that's more people she can help make smile and laugh.  And bring her own little ray of sunshine into this world...  :)

Jaz's shopping video is on @buzzfeed!!! :D

Ok- remember how I was happy because Jasmine had one picture in a BuzzFeed article over the summer?

Well, imagine how excited I was when a friend emailed me that there was a whole story on BuzzFeed about Jasmine!!

They took little segments out of her "Dog Goes Shopping" Video and created a storyline from it.  :)

That was the video that first made Jasmine famous.  Most people don't know this, but that was actually my 2nd "Dog Goes Shopping" video.

Here's the original:

This one is cute for me to watch.  Look how young Jasmine was.  This was after she just barely had learned the shopping cart trick.  She would stop after each time and look at me to make sure she was doing it right.  (And to get her treat!)   I think she's so cute.   :)    (But I know I'm a little biased.)  :)

A Doggy Valentine

Happy Valentine's Day!!  (From me and Jaz!)  :D

For me, Valentine's Day isn't about whether you have a significant other in your life.

For me, it's about showing and telling your friends and family that you love and care about them.

For me, it still has the same youthful innocence of when I passed out kiddie valentines to all my classmates in elementary school.  I still do buy those kid valentines to give to my friends that live near me.

But this year, I decided to make one for all my online friends.  :)   So- here's a pic of Jaz- asking you to be her Valentine.  That's the great thing about dogs.  They just love everybody.  (at least Jaz does.)

I think there's a lesson to be learned here.  Share your love.  Be friendly to everyone- even total strangers.  You will make a difference in their day, and maybe their life.  :)

Happy Valentine's Day my friends.  :)

Meet Jasmine! (in the 202 Magazine!)

This month (Feb) Jasmine has an article in the 202 magazine!   I scanned it, so hopefully you'll be able to read the words if you click on the picture!

They asked me what Jasmine's best trick was.  (How do you pick?)
What her favorite local hang-out was.  (Going with me to get take-out at Joe's BBQ)
What her favorite food was.  (Natural Balance)
And then, they wanted to know about her life.
So I told them about everything we've been up to in the last year!

2012 was quite the busy year for us!
We traveled to both sides of the country, and made quite a few TV appearances!
(The big ones being:  Who Let The Dogs Out, Good Morning America,
and Anderson Cooper!)
Then I talked a little bit about our work as a volunteer therapy dog.
It was definitely a busy fun-filled year, and I can't wait to see what the future holds in 2013!  :)

Funny Dog Tricks

So I need a little help!!

An agent contacted me and wanted a video clip of Jasmine's funniest dog trick to submit for a commercial.  They want one that makes you laugh out loud the first time you see it.  I've seen all of Jasmine's tricks so many times, I can't even begin to guess which one that would be.

Any guesses?  Which should I submit??   Here's the ones I was considering:

Dog Saves Christmas- & goes to school. ;)

My friend on Facebook just wrote this to me:

"My daughter's 2nd grade teacher shares YouTube videos w/ the kids, during their 'brain break' time. Most of the videos involve dogs. So, she's sharing this one w/ her teacher tomorrow for the class to watch!"

How fun is that! :D

Jaz just loves kids.  I think she picks up on their energy and enthusiasm for life.    We've visited schools in my area, but it's fun to think about kids in different states enjoying Jasmine's dog tricks too.  I love listening to kids laugh.  It's the best sound in the world.  If you hear of someone else sharing Jasmine's trick videos, please let me know!  :)

Jasmine's latest photoshoot- Car Seat Covers!

So... Fun News!

Jaz did a product photoshoot for Petsmart!

Sometime in the Spring-Summer of 2013, keep an eye out for some cream colored car seat covers with Jasmine's picture on the package!

I didn't get any photos behind-the-scenes during the shoot because I was too busy being the trainer.

I think I need to get an assistant to come with me so THEY can take the behind-the-scene pics!

For the photoshoot, we traveled about a 1/2 hour to a small photography studio.  The company literally had somehow gotten a white SUV inside this small room.  Jaz was sitting on the passenger side seat (the door was open, with the window rolled down).

The photographer was taking pictures through the window, and I was standing behind her holding treats over her head.  You get pretty cozy at these things!   I spent my time holding up turkey and telling Jaz: "Look, Look.  Staaaay.  Good Girrrrrlllll."   It's a hard job, but somebody's got to do it.    ;)

Jaz did super good!  I was expecting to be there an hour for the shoot, but we were done in about 20 minutes.  That included repositioning for multiple poses and breaks to change stuff about the car.   So... piece of cake!

I'll let you know when it comes out.  (Or someone let me know if you see Jasmine's picture on a package of car seat covers!!)

Since I didn't have any behind-the-scenes pics, I just included pics from other photoshoots that Jasmine has done.   I think they're cute.
(But I know I'm kind of biased!!)  ;)

Trick Dog/ Therapy Dog Visits the 3rd Grade

Last month, Jasmine and I went back to school!  Well... to visit the 3rd grade classes at an elementary school!  We had SO MUCH FUN!  (as you can tell from the video.)
First, I talked about what we do as a therapy dog team.  Then we had time for some Q & A.  Then finally- their favorite part- the trick show.  :)
You can just tell from the excitement in the kids' voices that they loved it!  Jasmine picks up on that energy and is eager to show off more tricks.  It's really fun!  No matter which trick we did, the kids just got a big kick out of it.  I just love their enthusiasm.   This is the same school that we visited last year too.  (Just a whole new set of 3rd Graders.)  :)   3rd Graders are the best!!

Jaz is a Calendar Girl!! :)

If you have a Page-A-Day dog calendar, then tomorrow Saturday Nov. 17th is Jasmine Day!!  :)

That's a reason to celebrate, right?  ;)   Like we need a reason.  Jasmine's motto is:  Live life with enthusiasm!!

Have a great weekend everyone!!!  :)

Jasmine, the Therapy Dog, Visits the 3rd Grade!

I'm a little behind on writing about life on my blog!

But on Oct. 5th- Jasmine and I went to an elementary school to talk to the kids!

This was so fun.  We did this last year too.

All the 3rd graders just finished reading the book "Rosie the Visiting Dog".... about a therapy dog who looks similar to Jasmine.

The teacher asked if Jasmine and I could come to the school so the children can meet a therapy dog in real life!

We talked about our experiences at hospitals and retirement centers, and what exactly a therapy dog does  And why we like to volunteer there.

After a long period of question and answers, we did a little trick demo.  (Very similar to what we do at the children's hospital.)

They just loved it!!

This is Jasmine's "Be Shy" trick.

Then Jasmine found a volunteer to demonstrate her "Cowboy Trick".

We did a trick show for about 20 minutes, I just wasn't able to get many pics.

All in all, a very fun day hanging out with the 3rd Graders!!  :)

Hopefully, these 3rd graders will remember the story they read a little better because of meeting my favorite pup Jasmine!

Happy 96th Birthday!!! :D

Boy, oh boy, Jasmine and I have had a busy month!!   Last week, we performed at a retirement center for this lady's 96th birthday!  I can't even tell you how much fun we had.  We did about a 30 minute trick show that showcased the majority of Jasmine's resume.  (Minus the tricks that had heavy props- like getting a drink from the fridge!)
They got such a kick out of Jasmine's little tricks.  It was so fun!  Then I took her around and let each resident pet her, and we talked about the pets they used to have.  It was so sweet.  There was a lot of animal lovers in the audience.   I also passed out Jasmine's card to everyone- so they could remember what she looked like.

When I approached one lady, she was smelling the card.  When I got to her, she asked me what the card was.  She wanted to know if it was perfume?  (That's when I realized this lady was blind.)
I said "No, that's a picture of my dog Jasmine!"
She said "Oooh!  I love dogs!!"
I said, "Well, I have my dog right here, would you like to pet her?"
"Oh yes please!"
I took her hand and placed it on Jasmine's back.  The lady was so thrilled.  She just smiled and smiled while stroking Jasmine.  It was the sweetest experience.  She was so happy to be petting a dog again.
And Jasmine is such a good sport.  She let everyone pet her, and still begged to do more tricks.  (to get more treats!)   This was how we ended the show:
What a great experience.  And I have to say THANK YOU to my friend Stacy- who came to help me.  I don't know what I'd do without her!  She ALWAYS comes whenever she can to help me with my Jasmine gigs.  She's so awesome.

I had posted on Facebook that we were performing at this lady's birthday party... and Stacy jokingly wrote "Can I come?"  (Even though I had already asked to have her come with me!)  I wrote back jokingly...

"Ummm... I don't know. I'm going to have to look over your resume to see if you qualify. Do you have any past experience working with a trick dog? I need someone who can juggle being Jasmine's stage manager, remembering her tricks, prompting me, helping me with props, giving me driving directions and being my navigator when I'm lost, and being Jasmine's personal assistant, not to mention my moral support and encouragement. On top of that, I need someone with a super friendly, caring, cheerful personality who is great with people. But can also be our expert photographer and videographer. It's a complicated job! Hmmm..... although looking over your resume here, I see you do have excellent references and personal recommendations. Ok- yep, you're absolutely perfect. You're hired. You can come."   LOL

Stacy and Jasmine both help bring a lot of joy to this world.  And I'm just along for the ride.  :)

P.S.  Yes, I did get video.  (Stacy did.)  But life has been so busy, I have not even had time to look at it!!

NEW TRICK- Dog does Laundry!

Jaz learned a new trick!  So I wanted to update her Canine Personal Assistant resume!  :D

Now this dog can do the laundry!  :D    Well, at least take the clothes out of the dryer.  She's not quite tall enough to do the wash yet!!  ;)

Jaz's New Dog Tricks

Jaz has a new trick video up!  (Well, kind of!)   I made a remix of some of Jasmine's old and new tricks.  (Including the "Blanket Thief" at the end.)   I think I'm going to re-upload it with music.  But until I get time to do that, here's a sneak peak:  :)

THANK YOU!!! :)

Jasmine just reached a milestone of 1,000 friends on Facebook, so to celebrate we're going to be having a raffle/contest.  (I even found a sponsor to donate some great prizes!)   More details to come- I'll post about it on our page- https://www.facebook.com/MyFavoritePupJasmine

But in the meantime, just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone!

We have met some wonderful friends all around the world over the past few years.  Through-out all the ups and downs, the exciting times, and the disappointing times...  I appreicate your love and encouragement.  I am glad you are a part of my life.   So to all our friends, old and new, THANK YOU for your love, support, and friendship.

Best Video Award Winner! :D

It's going to feel like Christmas in July when I post this... but there's a reason!

At the BlogPaws pet social media convention, Jasmine was nominated for a "Nose-to-Nose" award... for "Best Video on a Blog".

This is the video that was nominated:

And she won!!  (Which caught me off-guard, considering the popularity of the other entries!)  The videos were judged not only on technical merits, but also on creativity and originality. (Which is where I was told we received a high score.)  :)  Once all the scores were averaged together, Jasmine's video had won!  :D    http://www.blogpaws.com/2012/07/blogpaws-2012-pet-blogging-and-social-media-award-winners-announced.html

It was so exciting!   We got to pick a shelter or rescue group to donate 5,000 meals to!!  (That's the best part!)   So we picked the Arizona Animal Welfare League.  It's one of Arizona's oldest and largest shelters.

Here's the beautiful trophy that Jasmine won.

This is a new trick she just learned.  (How to put her paw on something and hold still for a picture.)

Here's my sweet pup.  Because of her funny little trick videos... we were able to help out a shelter by giving them 5,000 meals from Halo and FreeKibble.  How cool is that??  I am sometimes amazed at all the paths this sweet little pup has taken me down.  Who knew?

Video of #Tillman skateboarding! (and Norman too!)

When I was at BlogPaws last month, I got to see Tillman the Skateboarding Bulldog perform live!!  It was soooo cool!!   Tillman absolutely LOVES his Natural Balance skateboard.  His owner Ron actually has to take it away from him or he would just ride it forever!!

I also was lucky enough to get the opportunity to interview Ron about how he taught Tillman how to skateboard!  But that video won't be ready until later!

For now, here's the video I took at BlogPaws in June:

Tillman the Skateboarding Bulldog and Norman the Scooter Dog show off their talents!!
