Copycats! (Copyright infringement)

Well, it's been said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

You know how Jasmine's "45 Cute Dog Tricks" video is big right now?   Well... so far I've found 3 people that have re-uploaded it as their own work.

I'm kind of torn.  On one hand, I feel like that's more publicity for Jasmine... her videos would reach a wider audience.  However, on the other hand, I don't really like people stealing my videos and uploading them as theirs either.   So... ???  I don't know what I should do.  2 of the 3 copycats seem like just individuals doing it because they think Jasmine is cute.  The first one listed seems like a company though. (BreakTV)  So I might report them for copyright infingement.  It kind of bugs me that they don't even list Jasmine's name either.  All through all of the tags, they always call her Jesse the Jack Russell Terrier.   Now don't get me wrong...  we love Jesse!  We're actually friends with them.  (Heather and Jesse)   However, the video is obviously of Jasmine.  Jasmine and Jesse don't even look alike.  (They're just doing that to draw more traffic to their video.)   So... that's the only one I'm considering reporting.

I don't know... what do you guys think I should do?   Here's the copycats:

Here's my original video:

They've changed the front picture, but the video is exactly the same....

What would you do?

  1. Report them to YouTube, they should take the videos down.

  2. I'd say, If it bothers you as much as it sounds like it does, then contact them and ask them kindly to take it down. If they don't, report them. It is YOUR RIGHT to do so.. it is YOUR VIDEO, not theirs. :)

  3. I think I would at least ask each site to link directly to your blog or your YouTube channel or remove the video. One photo of Nitro got out last year where he was holding a flag (we had no power from a big storm) and I couldn't watermark it because my computer was down. This year the photo started showing up everywhere on the 4th of July with no watermark. All my DDR followers started tagging me and right away the sites asked if I wanted them to take it down and I said no as long as they linked to our website. So you might want to ask them to do that for you. Good luck and the video ROCKS!

  4. Hmmm, I think I would approach them and say "you are stealing my stuff" and go from there reaction. Good luck sorting this out!

  5. Report all of them! Copyright infringement is serious! If you don't report them, they'll keep doing it, and they'll do it to others.

  6. I would report them-and don't feel bad about doing it! It's not their original work and they have no rights to be doing that....That's just how I feel though-be it for a photo or video.

  7. I would probably request that they be taken down. Anyone that wants to share the videos on a blog, etc. can just share your original video. You run two risks with them up: (1) without Jasmine's name or a link to contact you, media and corporate sponsors will not be able to reach you if this is all they see, and (2) the views potentially eat out of any youtube ad partnership count you may have.

That said, if it's just fandom, you don't want to come across as an alienating jerk, so be careful. I would at least get the company one down though.

  8. I think let them know, asking them to take it down or credit it to you and Jasmine. If they don't, then report them because they are not doing the right thing.

  9. CJ,

There is a simple way to remove re-uploaded content from YouTube (I do it all the time).

You just need to fill out a Copyright Infringement form and the video gets quickly removed by YouTube. Here is the link to do it:

I love that video of Jaz, by the way. I especially love the clip of her on the swing with the adorable cat. :)

    1. OK- I took your advice. I filed a copyright infringement form for these copycats (plus 2 more I discovered.)

I mean.... I am flattered that they like my dog that much to want to show people. But then someone also told me about a video where they were claiming Jasmine was their dog and they trained her. (People are weird.) Whatever... I have the real Jasmine lying beside me right now. :)

      Anyway- thanks for the advice!!

And that cat is named Squeakers. That's my parents cat. I've tried working with him a little bit- to see if he was treat motivated. NOPE. He's just wants to lie around and do nothing all day!! (But he's a good cat.) (He excels at a down/ stay.) That's about it!! ;)

    2. No problem. :) It bothers me to see anyone's original videos being re-posted by others and represented as their own. You are right - some people are strange.

Squeakers is so adorable, and he sounds like quite the personality! Cats make me laugh. :)

  10. Thumbs up! You did all the work (training) and you and Jaz deserve all the credit!
